Here’s a clip of Steve Harvey from his talk show where he was celebrating his recent 56th birthday. As part of the birthday festivities, he was surprised with a live feed to Orlando, where he spoke with the couple who gave him his first big break.
No, I don’t mean his first comedy gig, I mean his first independent contractor gig as a freelance carpet cleaner 30 years ago in Cleveland. No mention if Steve was good or not at vacuuming, but fast forward to a successful career which according to his Wikipedia entry, includes roles as an:
“…actor, comedian, entertainer, television/radio personality and best-selling author who hosts The Steve Harvey Morning Show, Steve Harvey, and Family Feud. ”
The clip also has a twofold message that both freelancers and small business owners would appreciate.
If you are starting up your own freelance or independent contracting gig, then this clip should hit home for you. Either you remember your first gig, or you have yet to find it. At any rate, if you keep at the hustle, you will get your break. But you can’t get it unless you try.
If you are a small business owner, then you probably remember your first paying customer. You probably felt the same emotions that both Steve AND the kind couple felt. You might’ve also given opportunities to rookie freelancers and contractors to learn the game.
The first check cashed will most likely be spent, but the experience and lessons learned will continue to pay out for a lifetime.
