5 easily avoidable blogging mistakes

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

Like most people, I’ve made mistakes in my life.

Some of these mistakes were made on my blog.

What kind of mistakes?

Just typical mistakes that I learned from and fixed in my blog.

Believe me, I’ve heard it all about my blog, such as:

5. Your blog design sucks

When you first start a blog, you will probably pick a blog theme or design that you love.

But what happens when someone says that your blog design sucks?

You have a few options:

  1. Come up with a witty comeback, such as “Oh yeah? Well, what’s YOUR blog?” (This could turn out good or bad.)
  2. Quit blogging forever.
  3. Try a new blog design.

Which option would you choose?

4. You write big blocks of text

Nobody enjoys reading for fun:

  • Phonebooks
  • Dictionaries
  • Anything that looks like a big block and a lot of work to read

Break up your text to make it easily scannable and skimmable. No more than 2-3 lines per paragraph max.

Here are a few other examples on how to make your blog text more scannable:

This is an example subheader

I like to use all capitals and green font to give my subheaders further pop and zing.

You like pop and zing, right?

Here are some other handy formatting examples to add pop and zing to YOUR blog:

  • Bolding
  • Underlining
  • Italicizing
  • Whatever formatting you want to use to add more pop and zing

3. Your writing is boring

Imagine if you had to explain your dream and/or your life’s passion to somebody.

What sort of language would you use in that conversation?

Now stop imagining it.

And start living it.

Then blog about it so we can learn about it!

2. You don’t use pictures

If you think about it, a blog is pretty much one of the few times in life that we can be as creative as we want with no limits.

Unless your blog is about something weird, like “How to not use pictures in a blog” then it’s recommended (by me) to use at least a picture or two per blog post.

Don’t forget, infographics are a very popular image choice used in many blogs these days:

Sometimes you can even use pictures that you took yourself.

For example, I was on a recent trip to Golden, Colorado, where I ate a cheeseburger at this cool place called Bob’s Atomic Burgers.

Here is the cheeseburger only moments before I ate it.

1. You stopped trying to improve the status quo

When you stop trying to improve the status quo of your blog, then you also stop trying to improve the status quo.

People with an Internet connection can usually find your blog and learn how to solve problems with the content you create.

But if you stop blogging, then people will not find your blog and will not learn from your knowledge and experience.

They may even make some of the same easily avoidable mistakes you made.

Conclusion

When it comes to blogging, the only mistake is the one made on a blog that doesn’t exist.

In other words…if you’re blogging, there are no mistakes.

Only opportunities.

Opportunities to learn, grow, and avoid that same mistake.

Also, if you start a blog or currently have a blog, then you will need a Web hosting provider you can trust to host not just your dream, but your blog as well.

My Web hosting provider for this blog and my dream is Bluehost.

  1. Nice and usefull post 🙂 For long time I was thinking what to do in my life, and my blog has been empty for a long time, so I finally decided to write about something I’m best in – Creativity 🙂
I have a lot of ideas, and trying to figure out way to realize them all, so I decided writing about creativity. I’m still at beginnign but with a lot of ideas for next posts and blog improvements, and I surely will follow your blog, you have great articles 🙂
